Tropische Zielen is een danstheatervoorstelling voor op festivals en in het theater die flirt met geschiedenis, identiteit en verlangen.
Een queer, koloniaal verhaal vol sensualiteit, stil verdriet en ongeziene kracht. Een ode aan mensen die zich losmaakten van de grond…
Ze zijn elkaar nooit werkelijk tegengekomen, en toch lijken hun levens spiegels van elkaar. Toto Koopman, muze van Chanel, dubbelspion in de oorlog, jetsetter avant la lettre. Walter Spies, kunstenaar, choreograaf, componist en de man die van Bali een artistiek toevluchtsoord maakte. Zij ging van Nederlands-Indië naar Europa. Hij van Europa naar Nederlands-Indië. Nooit eerder werden de verhalen van deze onbekende historische figuren op het podium gebracht.
Tropische Zielen wordt gemaakt door choreograaf Marijke de Vos en theatermaker Dewi Reijs. Twee makers met bloedbanden met de tropen, die hun eigen wortels afstoffen en zich verliezen in de
geschiedenis van de mysterieuze Koopman en Spies.
Teddy shouldn’t smoke is een Rotterdams dansgezelschap onder leiding van choreograaf Marijke de Vos. Het gezelschap maakt voorstellingen op het snijvlak van dans, performance en technologie, waarin fysieke intensiteit en visuele verbeelding samenkomen. Met een uitgesproken signatuur onderzoekt Teddy thema’s als identiteit en queer perspectieven. Het werk was eerder te zien op festivals als het O. Festival, Lowlands en Down The Rabbit Hole, en in theaters door het land.
Dewi Reijs is actrice, theatermaker en producent. Ze is bekend van haar werk bij Internationaal Theater Amsterdam en producties zoals De Stille Kracht, evenals speelfilms zoals Een echte Vermeer en televisieseries waaronder Haantjes, De eerste keer, De regels van Floor en Gooische Vrouwen. Daarnaast maakte zij de zelfgeschreven
theatervoorstelling Trojaanse Wijven. Als oprichter van Buddy Film Foundation zet zij zich in voor inclusieve verhalen, met aandacht voor migratie, representatie en nieuwe makers.

An ode to people who broke away from the ground beneath them…
They never truly met, and yet their lives seem to mirror one another. Toto Koopman – Chanel muse, double agent during the war, and an international socialite ahead of her time. Walter Spies – artist, choreographer, composer, and the man who turned Bali into an artistic sanctuary. She travelled from the Dutch East Indies to Europe. He from Europe to the Dutch East Indies. Never before have the stories of these unknown historical figures been brought to the stage.
Tropical Souls is created by choreographer Marijke de Vos and theatre maker Dewi Reijs. Two makers with blood ties to the tropics, dusting off their own roots while losing themselves in the history of the mysterious Koopman and Spies.
Teddy shouldn’t smoke is a Rotterdam-based dance company led by choreographer Marijke de Vos. The company creates performances at the intersection of dance, performance, and technology, where physical intensity and visual imagination come together. With a distinctive artistic signature, Teddy explores themes such as identity and queer perspectives. Their work has previously been presented at festivals including O. Festival, Lowlands, and Down The Rabbit Hole, as well as in theatres throughout the Netherlands.
Dewi Reijs is an actress, theatre maker, and producer. She is known for her work with Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and productions such as De Stille Kracht, as well as feature films including A Real Vermeer and television series such as Haantjes, The First Time, Floor Rules, and Gooische Vrouwen. She also created the self-written theatre performance Trojan Women. As founder of Buddy Film Foundation, she is committed to inclusive storytelling, with a focus on migration, representation, and emerging makers.
